About Me

I am a Dubliner, a husband and a father of three living in Whitehall. A media veteran, I am currently studying law.

My Interests

As well as criminal law, I am interested in immigration and asylum law. This was sparked by meeting many very impressive asylum seekers while volunteering with the wonderful Practical Language School, based in Belvedere Youth Club, on Dublin’s Buckingham Street.

My Media Career

The Sunday Tribune

Prior to my legal career, I had a long and successful career in journalism.  I became a journalist in 1989, working first as a news reporter & news feature writer for The Sunday Tribune. I eventually became the paper’s Deputy Business Editor. 

RTE

Current Affairs Reporter

  • In 1994 I joined RTE’s TV Current Affairs Dept as a reporter on Marketplace, the business programme. In 1996 I moved to the flagship current affairs programme, Prime Time.

Head of Current Affairs

  • In 2002 I became Head of the TV Current Affairs Dept with responsibility for Prime Time, Prime Time Investigates, Questions & Answers and coverage of Special Events. 
  • I was in charge of seven General Election “leaders debates.

Producer

  • In 2011/2012, I produced and directed a two-part documentary on the political and social history of RTE TV – “Battle Station”, presented by John Bowman – to mark the station’s 50th anniversary.
  • After the general election in February 2011, I produced RTE’s Live Coverage of the State Visits of Queen Elizabeth and President Obama.

Managing Editor

  • From 2012 until 2022 I was Managing Editor of Current Affairs with overall responsibility for Prime Time, the RTE Investigations Unit, Claire Byrne Live & Special Events.

Editorial Advisor

  • My role was to advise on how RTE could protect itself against editorial complaints without losing the potency of its flagship factual programming.
  • In 2022 I became Editorial Advisor, with responsibility for editorial soundness and compliance of all RTE Content outside the News and Current Affairs Division.

King's Inns

Barrister-at-Law (BL)

  • I am currently completing the full-time Barrister-at-Law (BL) degree course in Kings Inns. I hope to be called to the Bar in the summer of 2024 & to begin my pupillage (apprenticeship) in Criminal Law in October 2024.
  • Becoming a barrister will be a whole new career and an exciting new chapter in my 60s.
